The Portable Media Center (PMC) concept, initially known as "Media2Go", was first revealed by Bill Gates at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2003.

PMC/ PMP is a hard disk or flash memory based entertainment devices that make it easy to store and play recorded TV, movies, home videos, music, and photos transferred from a PC. These handheld entertainment devices allow you to savor your favorite entertainment anytime and anywhere you want. The main difference between Media Players and Media Centers is that Media Centers meet specifications outlined by Microsoft. And use Microsoft's operating system (OS) designed for small devices called Windows Mobile.

The versatility of playing different formats is the key attractant of PMC/PMP. For instance, PMC/PMP able to load and play different formats of

PMC/PMP has built in true color LCD screen not only for file navigation but also to watch video content. Therefore, the screen size on these players is generally 3.5 inches to 7 inches. Size and features vary between the various players, with some having expansion slots for media cards or some having OTG (On-the-go) functions where one button back up from USB devices on the move without computer. The storage size of PMC/PMP normally starts from 20GB (Can up to 100GB). 320 hours of music at near CD quality (128kbps MP3) or approximately 35 hours of video at VCD/MPEG 1 quality can be stored in 20GB models. The size and weight of PMC/PMP is normally twice the size and weight of hard drive-based MP3 players due to the larger screen and battery.
